Sultry Eccentricity, Salty Countenances, Silver Lining

The mystique surrounding Southern writers conjures notions of sultry eccentricity, salty countenances and silver tongues.  And when you mix several of these creatures together to celebrate one of their living legends, while overlooking a glittering moonlit river in Beaufort from the upper veranda of a pre-Revolutionary house, the resulting scene drips wit, grace, and grit.

Such was Thursday night, when a close group of Pat Conroy’s fellow writers, confidantes and long-time friends gathered for an intimate 70th birthday celebration at Beaufort’s newest luxury inn, Anchorage 1770, in anticipation of this week’s Pat Conroy at 70 Literary Festival.
