450 Years Ago, You Started Your Adventure!

What if I told you that you’re about to go on an adventure and it starts over 450 years ago? You see, that’s when the French first settled this area we call the Lowcountry and they were soon overtaken by the Spanish who made Their settlement here, Santa Elena, the Capitol of La Florida. That’s right, before the English and Jamestown, America was settled by the French and the Spanish right here around Beaufort, SC in 1562.

There is a deep and rich history here and you can feel it everywhere you go. The small town of Beaufort was chartered in 1711. The old church cemeteries are where Colonial and British Soldiers were laid to rest. The waterfront mansions on “The Bluff” were used as Union Hospitals during the Civil War. In fact, our mansion was hospital number 11.  It’s all in walking distance from your historic Lowcountry base camp, Anchorage 1770 Inn.

If you don’t want to walk, take a horse carriage ride to the “Old Point”, a neighborhood where Tidal Holm, the house featured in The Big Chill and The Great Santini is located. Learn about the 300+ years of history that Beaufort has survived wars, hurricanes and rebuilding. Beaufort is home to the new Reconstruction Era National Monument which includes Penn Center, one of the first places where former slaves could get a formal education, and where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. drafted the “I Have a Dream” speech.

If it’s a present day adventure you desire, book an inshore fishing trip to the creeks and rivers all around Beaufort. Redfish, Sea Trout, Flounder and in the Spring the massive Cobia are all in abundance. To make sure you get your workout in, take a stand-up paddle board or kayak for a spin. There is also the amazing Spanish Moss Trail where you can walk, run or bike through the woods and over marsh lined bridges. You might see a few dolphins, deer, or some beautiful birds fishing and bathing in the tidal basin.

When you’re finished with all this, take a stroll downtown. You’ll find boutique shopping at Scout Southern Market, Retail Therapy or for the guys, Bay Street Outfitters. There are also wonderful art galleries with well established Lowcountry craftsmen. Paintings, carvings and the Gullah grass weaved baskets can all be found within 4 or 5 blocks from the inn.

After you’re educated and exhausted, finish off your afternoon in a coffee bar or an ice cream shop for a well deserved snack or up on our rooftop for a relaxing cocktail, while enjoying one of Beaufort’s beautiful and colorful sunsets.
